Everyone, everywhere should have access to water and sanitation fascilties

United Nations

According to the Western Cape Government’s Department of Social Development (DSD) (2019), there were 4,862 homeless people in the greater Cape Town area and an estimated 700 living in the central business district (CBD). Officials from the Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID) acknowledge the economic hardship resulting from COVID-19 has very likely increased homelessness and that people living on the streets are at significant risk from the virus because of limited access to water and sanitation. The project aims to determine remedial measures to support the unsheltered homeless and ensure they have access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene services.

The project is inspired by GoBanyo, a Hamburg based initiative driven by a non-profit company. The GoBanyo team are in full support of the development of a similar project in Cape Town. They are willing to share their expertise and knowledge for the duration of the project under their mission, “Access to Water”.

Water is the source of all life - the most basic human need and a human right. Everything we do inspires and enables positive change for improving access to clean WAter, safe Sanitation and good Hygiene conditions (in short, WASH).

We work with like-minded organizations to help achieve United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 to ensure that safe water and sanitation is available to everyone, everywhere, forever.

Viva con Agua is implementing projects in Elliotdale District, Eastern Cape and Cape Town. We collaborate with many partners including other NPOs, municipalities, line ministries and the private sector.

WINS

WASH in Schools (WINS) is our project to improve Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in Schools. We have built new toilets and rehabilitated water tanks, gutters, and drainage. We want to enhance learners' health and educational outcomes by creating a safe and clean learning environment.

Walls 4 WASH

Walls 4 WASH is a project which best represents the playful and joyful approach we take when engaging with children. This project assists schools and learners to raise awareness and improve the practice of hygiene behaviour – primarily, handwashing with soap. Local artists and children have painted murals on toilets and school walls to depict superheroes called the “WASH Warriors” created by the children themselves. These Warriors, which feature in our comic book, are characters inspired by the themes of water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Football 4 WASH

Football 4 WASH is a project for girls and boys of all abilities which uses the power of the world's most popular sport - football. Our Football 4 WASH project helps improve the understanding of children regarding the importance of water, sanitation, and hygiene. It is also an engaging and playful way of instilling positive hygiene behaviour in the children.

WASH Bus

It was estimated in March 2020 that Cape Town is home to 14,357 people living on the street – a calculation made before South Africa’s first lockdown in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. It was also claimed in the same year that only 2,500 beds were available in shelters in Cape Town, essentially leaving approximately 12,000 people without any shelter or sanitary infrastructure.

Our WASH Bus initiative recognises that by denying a human their basic right to water and sanitation, their marginal position within society is accentuated. The main objective of our WASH Bus initiative is to restore the dignity of Cape Town’s unsheltered homeless population by providing them their basic human right to a shower and toilet facility.
