Walls Of Hygiene

Walls of Water is an ongoing project in partnership with Baz-Art. Viva con Agua supported the 5th International Public Arts Festival (IPAF) which took place in February – March 2021. This festival brought artists from South Africa together with the residents of Langa, Cape Town. We facilitated a discussion between the two groups so that the artists could learn and understand the water and sanitation reality faced by the residents. The conversation and exchange with the residents gave the artists new emotional perspective and inspiration to use when painting murals in the Langa townships.

Through capturing the reality of people’s lives, we want to create opportunity for dialogue, analysis of problems and collective action. Through recognising and acknowledging the real issues, we want to get to lasting solutions. These solutions have to be proposed by the residents, taken up by the local leadership, the movers and shakers so that they lead to lasting improvements in water, sanitation and hygiene.

The Process

The heart of the process is using the universal language of art to co-diagnose the context, its determinants (the barriers and drivers) and drive towards collective action to improve WASH behaviour/practices and improve access to WASH services. We work with our target audience, so they transform their own realities as opposed to us trying to change their reality for them. We know the former does not lead to sustainable change.
